1 And it happened that when Jesus finished ordering his twelve disciples he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities. 2 But John, having heard in the prison of the works of Christ, sent* through his disciples, 3 and said to him: Are you the coming one or shall we expect another? 4 And Jesus answered and said to them: Journey and announce to John the things that you hear and see; 5 blind men see again and lame men walk around, lepers are cleansed and deaf men hear, and dead men are raised, and the poor are evangelized. 6 And blessed is he who is not scandalized by me. 7 And as they were journeying Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John: What did you go into the desert to watch? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft things? Behold, those who wear soft things are in the houses of the kings. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one surpassing a prophet. 10 This is the one concerning whom it is written: Behold, I myself send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your road before you. 11 Amen, I say to you, there has not arisen among those born of women any greater than John the baptist; but the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the baptist until now the kingdom of the heavens is forced into, and forceful men are seizing it. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And, if you wish to receive it, he himself is Elijah who is to come. 15 Let him who has ears hear. {21.31b Jesus says to them: Amen, I say to you that the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are preceding you into the kingdom of God.* 32 For John came toward you in the way of justice,* and you did not believe in him. But the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed in him; and you yourselves saw this and did not even feel concerned so as to believe in him afterward.} 16 But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who crying out to the others 17 say: We fluted for you and you did not dance; we dirged and you did not mourn. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say: He has a demon. 19 The son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold, a gluttonous man and a winedrinker, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her works. |
18 And his disciples announced all these things to John. And he called toward him a certain two of his disciples 19 and sent* them toward the Lord, saying: Are you the coming one or shall we expect a different one? 20 And when the men arrived toward him they said: John the baptist sent us toward you, saying: Are you the coming one or shall we expect a different one? 21 At that hour he healed many from diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and he granted that many blind men might see. 22 And he answered and said to them: Journey and announce to John the things that you viewed and heard; blind men see again, lame men walk around, lepers are cleansed and deaf men hear, dead men are raised, the poor are evangelized. 23 And blessed is he who is not scandalized by me. 24 And as the messengers of John were going away he began to say toward the crowds concerning John: What did you go into the desert to watch? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Behold, those in glorious clothing and possessing luxury are in the kingly courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one surpassing a prophet. 27 This is the one concerning whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your road before you. 28 I say to you, no one among those born of women is greater than John; but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. {16.16b From then the kingdom of God is evangelized, and everyone forces his way into it.} {16.16a The law and the prophets were up till John.} 29 And all the people heard, and the tax-collectors justified* God, having been baptized in the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers set aside the will of God* for themselves, not having been baptized by him. 31 To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in a marketplace and crying out to different ones, and who say: We fluted for you and you did not dance; we dirged and you did not weep. 33 For John the baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say: He has a demon. 34 The son of man has come eating and drinking, and you say: Behold, a gluttonous man and a winedrinker, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners. 35 And wisdom is justified by all her children. |
