1 Then Jesus was led up into the desert by the spirit, to be tempted by the devil. 2 and, after he fasted for forty days* and forty nights, afterward he became hungry. 3 And the temper said to him: If you are the son of God, say that these stones become breads. 4 But he answered and said: It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word going out through the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil takes him along unto the holy city, and stood him upon the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and says to him: If you are the son of God, cast yourself down. For it is written: He shall give his angels orders concerning you and upon their hands they shall lift you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said to him: Again it is written: Do not tempt the Lord your God. 8 Again the devil takes him along unto a very high mountain, and shows him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory* 9 And he said to him: To you I shall give all these things if you fall and worship me 10 Then Jesus says to him: Get back, Satan. For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. 11 Then the devil left him and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. |
12 And straightway the spirit cast him out into the desert. 13 And he was in the desert for forty days* being tempted by Satan, and he was with the beasts, and the angels were ministering to him. |
1 And Jesus, full of the holy spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led up in the spirit in the desert, 2 for forty days* being tempted by the devil. and he ate nothing in those days, and when they ended he became hungry. 3 But the devil said to him: If you are the son of God, say to this stone that it become bread. 4 And Jesus answered to him: It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone. [9 And he led him unto Jerusalem and stood [him] upon the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him: If you are the son of God, cast yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: He shall give his angels orders concerning you, to guard you, 11 and upon their hands they shall lift you lest you strike your foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answered and said to him: It has been said: Do not tempt the Lord your God.] [5 And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in a moment of time: 6 And the devil said to him: To you I shall give all this authority and their glory,* since it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 You, then, if you worship before me, all things shall be yours. 8 And Jesus answered and said to him: It is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.] 13 And when the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune moment. |
