7 And, having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said* to* them: Broods of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath about to happen? 8 Make fruit, therefore, worthy of repentance. 9 And do not think to say among yourselves: We have Abraham as our father, for I say to you that God is able to raise children for Abraham from these stones. 10 But already the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut off and cast into the fire. 11 I baptize* you* in water* unto repentance. But* the one who is coming* after me* is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not fit to remove. He himself will baptize you in the holy spirit and fire. 12 His fork is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and he will lead together his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. |
7 And he preached saying: The one mightier than I is coming* after me.* the thong of whose shoes I am not fit to stoop and loosen. 8 I baptized* you* with water,* but* he himself will baptize you in the holy spirit. |
7 He said,* therefore, to* the crowds journeying out to be baptized by him: Broods of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath about to happen? 8 Make fruits, therefore, worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say among yourselves: We have Abraham as our father, for I say to you that God is able to raise children for Abraham from these stones. 9 But already the axe is also laid to the root of the trees. Every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut off and cast into the fire. 10 And the crowds asked him, saying: What therefore shall we do? 11 And he answered and said to them: He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has not, and he who has foods, let him do likewise. 12And tax-collectors also came to be baptized and said to him: Teacher, what shall we do? 13 And he said to them: Collect no more than what you are ordered. 14 And soldiers also asked him, saying: What shall even we do? And he said to them: Neither shake down nor extort, and be content with your stipends. 15 But while all the people were having thoughts and reasoning in their hearts about John, whether he himself might be the Christ, 16 John answered, saying to all: I baptize* you* with water.* But* the one is coming* mightier than I, the thong of whose shoes I am not fit to loosen. He himself will baptize you in the holy spirit and fire. 17 His fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. 18 With many other things, therefore, he was exhorting and preaching the gospel to the people. |

24 And they had been sent out from the
Pharisees. 25 And they asked
him and said to him:
Why therefore do you baptize if you are not
the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?
26 John answered them,
saying: I baptize
in water; in your midst stands one
whom you do not know, 27 the one
coming after me,
of whom I myself am not worthy that I might
loosen the thong of
his sandal.
28 These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.
