1 At that time Jesus was journeying through the grainfields on the sabbaths, but his disciples grew hungry and began to pick heads of grain and to eat them. 2 But the Pharisees saw and said to him: Behold, your disciples are doing what is not permitted to be done on a sabbath. 3 But he said to them: Have you not read what David did when he and those with him grew hungry, 4 how he went into the house of God, and they ate the showbread, which was not permitted to him to eat, nor to those* with him,* except to the priests alone? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple desecrate the sabbath and are blameless? 6 But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 But, had you known what this is: I wish for mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the blameless. 8 For the son of man is Lord of the sabbath. |
23 And it happened that he was journeying along through the grainfields on the sabbaths, and his disciples began to make their way picking the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him: Behold, why do they do what is not permitted on the sabbaths? 25 And he says to them: Have you not ever read what David did when he himself and those with him had need and grew hungry, 26 how he went into the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and he ate the showbread, which one is not permitted to eat, except the priests, and gave it also to those* who were with him?* 27 And he was saying to them: The sabbath came about on account of man and not man on account of the sabbath. 28 Thus the son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. |
1 But it happened that he was journeying on through grainfields on a sabbath, and his disciples were picking the heads of grain and eating them, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said: Why do you do what is not permitted on the sabbaths? 3 And Jesus answered and said toward them: Have you not even read that which David did when he himself and those who were with him grew hungry, 4 how he went into the house of God, and he took and ate the showbread, which one is not permitted to eat, except the priests alone, and gave it to those* with him?* 5 And he was saying to them: The son of man is Lord of the sabbath. |
