28 And when he had come to the other side* into the country of the Gadarenes there met him coming out from the tombs two who were demoniacs, very violent, so that there was not anyone strong enough to go along that road. 29 And behold, he shouted, saying: What are you to us, son of God? Did you come here before the season to torment us? 30 But there was far from them a herd of many swine feeding. 31 But the demons were calling upon him, saying: If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine. 32 And he said to them: Get on. But they came out and went away into the swine. And behold, the whole herd rushed down the bank into the sea and died in the waters. 33 But those who were feeding fled and went away in the city and announced * all things, even those things of the demoniacs. 34 And behold, all the city came to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they called upon him to leave their borders. |
1 And he came to the other side* of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when he came out of the boat straightway there met him from the tombs a human with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his housing amongst the tombs, And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 on account that on many* occasions he* had been bound with* shackles and chains,* and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles ripped open, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 And through it all, night and day, he was shouting amongst the tombs and in the mountains, and was cutting himself open with stones. 6 And, upon seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped him* 7 And he shouted with a great voice and says: What are you to me, Jesus, son of God most high? I adjure you by God, do not torment me. 8 For he had said to him: Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.* 9 And he asked him: What is your name? And he says to him: Legion is my name, because we are many. 10 And he was calling upon him greatly not to send them away, out of the country. 11 But there was at the mountain* a great herd of swine feeding there. 12 And they called upon him, saying: Throw us into the swine, so that we might go* into them. 13 And he allowed them. And the unclean spirits came out and went into the swine, and the herd rushed down the bank into the sea, about two thousand, and were drowned in the sea. 14 And those who were feeding them fled and announced* it in the city and in the fields. And they came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they come toward Jesus, and they observed the demoniac* seated, the one who had the legion, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen how it had happened to the demoniac narrated it to them, and about the swine. 17 And they began to call upon him to go away from their borders. 18 And when he had embarked onto the boat the demoniac calls upon him that he might be alongside him. 19 And he did not permit him, but says to him: Get on to your house, and to your own, and announce to them as many things as the Lord has done for you. 20 And he went away and began to preach in the ten cities as many things as Jesus had done for him, and all wondered. |
26 And they sailed into the country of the Gadarenes, which is on the side* opposite Galilee. 27 But when he came upon the land there met him from the city a certain man who had demons. And for quite some time he had not dressed in clothing, and he did not remain in a house, but rather amongst the tombs. 28 But, upon seeing Jesus, he shouted out and fell before him* and with a great voice said: What are you to me, Jesus, son of God most high? I request you, do not torment me. 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit* to come out away from the man. For it had snatched him many* times, and he* was bound with* chains and shackles* and imprisoned, and after breaking his bonds he would be driven by the demon into the desert. 30 But Jesus asked of him: Your name, what is it? But he said: Legion, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they were calling upon him not to command them to go into the abyss. 32 But there was a herd of quite a few swine feeding there on the mountain.* And they called upon him to allow them to go* into those. And he allowed them. 33 But the demons came out away from the man and went into the swine, and the herd rushed down the bank into the lake and drowned. 34 But those who were feeding, when they saw what happened, fled and announced* it in the city and in the fields. 35 But they came out to see what had happened and they came toward Jesus, and they found the man from whom the demons had come out seated at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 But those who had seen how the demoniac had been saved announced it to them. 37 And the whole multitude of the region of the Gadarenes asked him to go away from them, because they were held by a great fear. But when he himself had embarked onto a boat he returned. 38 But the man from whom the demons had come out requested to be with him. But he released him, saying: 39 Return to your house, and narrate as many things as God did for you. And he went away into the whole city, preaching as many things as Jesus had done for him. |
