6 But, when the birthday* of Herod came, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst and pleased Herod, 7 whence he promised with an oath to give* her whatever she asked. 8 But she, prompted by her mother, says: Give me here upon a platter the head of John the baptist. 9 And, though the king was grieved, on account of his oaths and of those lying back with him* he commanded it to be given. 10 And he sent and had him beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was borne upon a platter and was given to the girl, and she bore it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and took the corpse and buried him, and when they came they announced it to Jesus. |
21 And, when an opportune day came, when Herod on his birthday* made a supper for his generals and chiliarchs and the first men of Galilee, 22 and the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced and it pleased Herod and those lying back with him,* the king said to the girl: Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. 23 And he swore many things to her: Whatever you ask me I will give* to you, up to half of my kingdom. 24 And she went out and said to her mother: What shall I ask for? And she said: The head of John the baptist. 25 And straightway she came in with haste toward the king and asked, saying: I wish for you to give me at once upon a platter the head of John the baptist. 26 And, though the king became very grieved, on account of his oaths and of those lying back he did not wish to refuse her. 27 And straightway the king sent an executioner and ordered him to bear his head. And he went away and had him beheaded in the prison, 28 and bore his head upon a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 And when his disciples heard they came and took his corpse and placed it in a tomb. {30 And the apostles gathered unto Jesus and they announced to him everything, as many things as they had done and as many things as they had taught.} |
