45 But from the sixth hour there was darkness upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 But around the ninth hour Jesus shouted out with a great voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? That is: My God, my God, On what account did you abandon me? 47 But some of those standing there heard and said: This man calls for Elijah. 48 And one of them, running straightway, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and placed it around a reed and had him drink. 49 But the rest said: Leave him; Let us see if Elijah comes saving him. 50 But Jesus again cried out with a great voice and let go* his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of* the temple was* rent* in two from above to below, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent, 52 and the tombs were opened up and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and having come out from the tombs after his raising they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 And, when the captain of a hundred and those with him keeping Jesus saw the quake and the things that had happened, they were very afraid, saying: Truly this one was a son of God. |
33 And when it was the sixth hour there was darkness upon the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus shouted with a great voice: Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? Which is translated: God of mine, God of mine, For what cause did you abandon me? 35 And some of those standing near heard and said: Behold, he calls for Elijah. 36 But a certain man, running, soaked a sponge with vinegar, placed it around a reed, and had him drink, saying: Leave him; Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down. 37 But Jesus let go* with a great voice and expired. 38 And the curtain of* the temple was* rent* in two from above to below. 39 And, when the centurion standing there before him saw that he thus expired, he said: Truly this man was a son of God. |
44 And it was about the sixth hour already and there was darkness upon the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 the sun being eclipsed, and the curtain of* the temple was* rent* in the middle. {36 But the soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar....} 46 And Jesus called out with a great voice and said: Father, into your hands I place my spirit. And, having said this, he expired. 47 And, when the captain of a hundred saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying: Certainly this man was righteous. 48 And all the crowds who had gathered to witness this, when they witnessed the things that had happened, beat their breasts and turned away. |

28 After this Jesus,
knowing that all things had already been accomplished, so that the scripture
might be finished, says: I am thirsty.
29 A vessel was sitting there full of
vinegar. They placed
on hyssop therefore a sponge full of the vinegar
and offered it to his mouth.
30 When therefore Jesus took the vinegar he
said: It is finished, and he inclined his head
and delivered up his spirit.
