33 And having come unto the place named Golgotha, which is named place of a skull, 34 they gave him* wine to drink, mixed with gall; and after tasting it he did not wish to drink it. 35 But after they crucified him they divided his clothing by casting a lot, 36 and took a seat and kept watch over him there. 37 And* they placed above his* head his written charge: This is* Jesus, the king* of the Jews.* 38 Then two* thieves were crucified with him,* one on the right* and one on the left.* 39 But those journeying by blasphemed* him, shaking their heads 40 and saying: You who would destroy the temple and build it up in three days, save yourself, if you are the son of God, and come down off the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocked* him, along with the scribes and elders, and said: 42 He saved others; he cannot save himself. {48 And one of them, running straightway, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and placed it around a reed and had him drink.} He is* king of Israel; let him descend now from the cross, and we will have faith in him. 43 He has faith in God; let him rescue him now, if he wishes for him; for he said: I am the son of God. 44 But the thieves crucifed with him reviled him in the same way. |
22 And they bore him upon the place Golgotha, which is translated as place of a skull. 23 And they gave him* myrrhed wine, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucify him and divide his clothing by casting a lot upon them to decide who would get what. 25 But it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And* there was* the inscription* of his charge written up: The king* of the Jews.* 27 And they crucified two* thieves with him,* one on the right* and one on his left.* 28 And the scripture was fulfilled which says: And he was reckoned with the lawless. 29 And those journeying by blasphemed* him, shaking their heads and saying: Ha, you who would destroy the temple and build it up in three days, 30 save yourself by coming down off the cross. 31 Likewise also the chief priests mocked* him among themselves, along with the scribes, and said: He saved others; he cannot save himself. {36a But a certain man, running, soaked a sponge with vinegar, placed it around a reed, and had him drink....} 32 Let the Christ,* the king of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we might see and have faith. And those crucified with him reviled him. |
32 But two* others also, evildoers, were led off with him* to be executed. 33 And when they came upon the place called skull, there they crucified him and the evildoers, this one on the right,* but that one on the left.* 34 But Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. But dividing his clothing they cast lots. 35 And the people stood there, watching. And the rulers also sneered, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if this man is* the Christ,* the elect of God. 36 But the soldiers also mocked* him, coming up and offering him* vinegar, 37 and saying: If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. 38 And* there was* an inscription* upon him:* This [is]* the king* of the Jews.* 39 But one of the evildoers hanging there blasphemed* him, saying: Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us. 40 But the other answered, rebuking him, and said: Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment? 41 And we justly, for we are receiving things worthy of what we did. But this man did nothing out of place. 42 And he said: Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 43 And he said to him: Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. |

17b ...they went out
unto what was named
the place of a
skull, which
is named Golgotha
in Hebrew,
18 where they
crucified
him, and with
him two
others here and there, but with Jesus in
the middle.
19 But Pilate also wrote the
titulus and placed it upon the cross,
and there it was
written: Jesus
the Nazoraean, the king of the Jews.
20 Many of the Jews therefore read this
titulus, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near
the city. And it was written in Hebrew, Roman, and Greek.
21 The
chief priests of the Jews said therefore
to Pilate: Do not write: The king of the Jews, but that he said:
I am king of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered:
What I have written I have written.
23 The soldiers
therefore when they crucified Jesus took his
clothing and made four divisions,
to each soldier a division, as well as the tunic. But the tunic was
seamless, from the upper part through the whole.
24 They said therefore toward each
other: Let us not rend it, but use a lot for it to decide
whose it will be, so that
the scripture might be
fulfilled which says: They divided my
clothes among them and cast a lot upon my clothing. Therefore the
soldiers did these things.
