The sermon on the mount or plain.
Matthew 5.1 = Luke 6.17ab.
Current mode: View.
Notes and quotes.
§ Although technically part of the double
tradition, the peculiar circumstances of this pericope afford a possible
agreement between Matthew and Luke against
Mark:
- The phrase εις
το ορος (onto the mountain)
belongs to the triple tradition, and although Matthew 5.1 locates it
at a different narrative spot than Mark 3.13 and Luke 6.12, in all three
cases the summons on the mountain is closely associated with the great multitude in Matthew 4.25 = Mark
3.7-8 = Luke 6.17bc. The context of the sermon, in other words, is
Marcan, even though Mark itself lacks the sermon. A major agreement.
