22 And they come into Bethsaida.
And they bear to him a blind man and call upon him to touch him.
23 And he took the hand of the
blind man and led him out of the village, and he spat into his eyes and placed
his hands on him, and asked him: Do you see anything?
24 And he saw again and said:
I see the men, because I see them walking around as trees.
25 Thereafter again he placed
his hands upon his eyes, and he looked intently, and he was restored, and saw
all things plainly.
26 And he sent him away to
his house, saying: Do not even go into the village.

Eusebius 89e. Word count: 692. Previous: John 8.48-59. Next: John 10.1-18. |
1 And he passed by and saw a man
blind from birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying:
Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born
blind?
3 Jesus answered: Neither this man nor
his parents sinned, but rather so that the works of God might be
made manifest in him.
4 It is binding upon us to work the
works of him who sent us while it is day; night is coming when no
one can work.
5 When I am in the world, I am the
light of the world.
6 After saying these things he
spat on the ground and made clay from
the spittle, and anointed him with the clay upon
his eyes.
7 And he said
to him: Get on to wash
in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted
Sent Away. He went away therefore and washed, and came
seeing.
8 His neighbors therefore, and those
who had witnessed him before, that he was a beggar, said: Is this
man not the one who was sitting and begging?
9 Others said: This is the man.
Others said: No, but he is like him. That man said: I am he.
10 They therefore said to him:
How then were your eyes opened up?
11 That man answered: The man
called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me:
Get on to Siloam and wash. After I did go away
and did wash, therefore, I saw again.
12 And they said to him: Where is that
man? He says: I do not know.
13 They lead the man once blind toward
the Pharisees.
14 But it was a sabbath the day
Jesus made the clay and opened up his eyes.
15 Again therefore the Pharisees too
asked him how he saw again. And he said to them: He placed clay upon
my eyes, and I washed myself, and I see.
16 Certain ones from among the Pharisees
therefore said: This man is not from God, because he does not keep
the sabbath. But others said: How can a man, a sinner, do
such signs? And there was a schism among them.
17 They say therefore to the blind man
again: What do you say about him, because he opened up your eyes?
And he said: He is a prophet.
18 The Jews therefore did not have
faith about him that he was blind and saw again, until they summoned
the parents of him who saw again
19 and asked them, saying: Is this man
your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?
20 His parents answered therefore
and said: We know that this man is our son and that he was born
blind.
21 But how he now sees we do not know,
or who opened up his eyes we do not know. Ask him; he is of age;
he himself will speak about himself.
22 His parents said these things
because they feared the Jews, for already the Jews had agreed
together that, if anyone confessed him to be the Christ, he would
be put out of the synagogue.
23 It was on account of this that his
parents said: He is of age; ask him.
24 Therefore a second time they
summoned the man who had been blind and said to him: Give glory to
God; we know that this man is a sinner.
25 That man therefore answered:
If he is a sinner I do not know; one thing I do know,
that I was blind and now I see.
26 They said therefore to him: What
did he do to you? How did he open up your eyes?
27 He answered them: I said it to you
already and you did not listen. Why do you wish to hear it again?
You do not also wish to become his disciples, do you?
28 And they reviled him and said:
You are a disciple of that man, but we are disciples of Moses.
29 We know that God has spoken to
Moses, but we do not know whence this man is.
30 The man answered and said to them:
For in this there is a wondrous thing, that you do not know whence
he is, and he opened up my eyes.
31 We know that God does not listen to
sinners, but rather if anyone is God-fearing and does his will,
he listens to this man.
32 It was not heard from the age that
anyone opened up the eyes of a man born blind.
33 If this man were not from God, he
could not do anything.
34 They answered and said to him:
You were born wholly in sins, and you are teaching us? And they
cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him
out, and he found him and said: Do you have faith in the son of man?
36 That man answered and said: And who
is he, Lord, that I might have faith in him?
37 Jesus said to him: You have seen
him, and the one speaking with you is he.
38 And he said: I have faith, Lord.
And he worshipped him.
39 And Jesus said: I came into this
world unto judgment, so that those who do not see might see,
and those who see might become blind.
40 Those of the Pharisees who were
with him heard these things, and they said to him: We are not
also blind, are we?
41 Jesus said to them: If you were
blind, you would not have sin. But now you say: We see.
Your sin remains.
