The Bethsaida section
in Mark.
The infancy narrative in Luke.
The Bethsaida section in Mark.
The Bethsaida section is Mark 6.45-8.26. It is so called
because it both begins and ends with the only two Marcan mentions
of the town of Bethsaida (Mark 6.45; 8.22). Matthew also has this
section, but lacks the framing references to Bethsaida. Luke lacks
the Bethsaida section; hence it is also known as the great Lucan omission.
These word lists, then, separate Mark 6.45-8.26 out from the
rest of Mark (1.1-6.44; 8.27-16.8; I omit the longer and shorter endings from
consideration).
This first list counts words present in the Bethsaida
section but absent from the rest of Mark; it counts only those words
with at least two instances:
- κοινοω (5)

The infancy narrative in Luke.
The Lucan infancy narrative takes up the first two chapters of
Luke, 1.1-2.52. Most of its material is unparalleled in any of the
other canonical gospels, even Matthew, which has its own infancy
narrative. I ought to make clear that the infancy narrative in
Luke actually details two different infancies, that of John the
baptist and that of Jesus. Some scholars suspect that the original
gospel of Luke lacked the first two chapters. The Marcionite version
of Luke apparently lacked them, and Luke 3.1-2 sounds like a
solid prologue on its own. (I myself am still quite undecided
on the issue.)
These word lists, then, separate Luke 1.1-2.52 out from the
rest of Luke (3.1-24.53).
