38 You heard that it was said: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I say to you not to stand against the evil one: But, whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And, to him who wishes to judge you and take your tunic give him also your cloak. 41 And, whoever will press you for one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks, and him who wishes to borrow from you do not turn away. {7.12a As many things, therefore, if you wish men to do them for you, thus also you do for them.} 43 You heard that it was said: Love your neighbor and hate* your enemy. 44 But I say to you: Love your enemies* and pray* on behalf of those who* persecute you,* 45 that you might become sons of* your heavenly father, since* he causes his sun to rise upon the evil* and the* good and it rains upon the just and the unjust. 46 For, if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47 If you also greet only your brethren, what more are you doing? Do not even the gentiles do the same? 48 You shall therefore be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect. |
27 Nevertheless I say to you who hear: Love your enemies,* do well to those who hate* you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray* concerning those who* revile you.* 29 To him who strikes you upon the cheek hold out the other also, And from him who takes your cloak do not withhold your tunic also. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from him who takes do not ask back. 31 And just as you wish men to do for you, do for them likewise. 32 And if you love those who love you, what kind of grace is it to you? For even the sinners love those who love them. 33 For, if you also love those who love you, what kind of grace is it to you? Even the sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what kind of grace is it to you? Even the sinners lend to sinners so that they might receive back in kind. 35 Rather love your enemies and do good and lend, hoping for nothing back, and great will be your wage, and you will be sons of* the most high, since* he himself is kind to the* ungrateful and the evil.* 36 Be compassionate just as also your father is compassionate. |
