His disciples asked him and said to him: Do you want us
to fast? And in what way shall we pray? Shall we do alms? And from what foods
shall we abstain?

Jesus said to them: If you fast you will beget sin
for yourselves, and if you pray they will condemn you, and if you give alms
you will be doing evil to your spirits.

But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites.
For they fast on the second and fifth days of the week; but you fast on
the fourth day and on the preparation.* Nor pray as the hypocrites, but
rather as the Lord commanded in his gospel.
* Id est, the sixth day of the week, the day before
the sabbath.
