Jesus said to them: If you fast you will beget sin for yourselves, and if you pray they will condemn you, and if you give alms you will be doing evil to your spirits.

§ Didache 8.1-2a:

Αι δε νηστειαι υμων μη εστωσαν μετα των υποκριτων. νηστευσουσι γαρ δευτερα σαββατων και πεμπτη· υμεις δε νηστευσατε τετραδα και παρασκευην. μηδε προσευχεσθε ως οι υποκριται, αλλ ως εκελευσεν ο κυριος εν τω ευαγγελιω αυτου.

But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites. For they fast on the second and fifth days of the week; but you fast on the fourth day and on the preparation.* Nor pray as the hypocrites, but rather as the Lord commanded in his gospel.

* Id est, the sixth day of the week, the day before the sabbath.
